Woody plays Isaac Davies, a man with a social conscience and a tangled love life; his wife has recently left him for another woman, his new girlfriend is only seventeen, and he's in love with the mistress of his best friend. A bittersweet social comedy framed as a loving tribute to neurotic New York, overlaid with an evocative Gershwin score, it's funny and sad in exactly the right proportions.
